Protects the front sight and also the muzzle. I only wish the retention was better. It's easy enough to add an elastic band to keep it on, otherwise it's always left behind when you slide it out of the zippered case.

I recently purchased one of these front sight covers for my M1 and received it a few days later. The cover slips on and not only protects the M1's sights but more importantly protects the rest of my guns from being dinged or scuffed by the Garand in the gun safe. Just to be clear, your M1 is a tough old character, this is to keep your other rifles from being damaged. The few dollars it cost are less than a burger, the piece of mind it gives though is priceless. Order one today!
