Welcome to Long Gong!

If you’re looking for a fun but challenging shooting competition, Long Gong is the game for you. This unique match tests your skills by stretching the .22LR cartridge out to 300 yards, where even the slightest mistake in wind reading or trigger control can mean the difference between a hit and a miss.
The Game
Rimfire Long Gong is a 300-yard shooting challenge using rifles chambered in .22LR only. The object of the game is simple: shoot the highest score possible while ringing steel plates at distance.
The Targets
Competitors fire on AR400 steel rimfire gongs, 3/16” thick, set at 300 yards:
-
8-inch gong = 1 point
-
6-inch gong = 2 points
-
4-inch gong = 3 points
These plates reward accuracy and add pressure as the targets get smaller.
The Setup
-
Shooting Position: From the bench using a bipod and bags. (No mechanical rests or sleds allowed.)
-
Rounds Per Shooter: Each shooter gets 10 rounds per set. (There are 5 sets in a competition)
-
Time Limit: 3 minutes to complete the round. The clock starts with your first shot.
The Order of Fire
Shooters must start by aiming at the 8-inch gong.
-
If you hit the 8” gong, you score 1 point. You may then either keep shooting at the 8” or advance to the 6” gong.
-
If you hit the 6” gong, you score 2 points. From there, you may stay on the 6” or move up to the 4”.
-
If you hit the 4” gong, you score 3 points and can continue to challenge it—or step back down if needed.
Miss Rule: If you miss, you must step back one gong in size.
Wrong Gong Rule: If you fire at the wrong gong, that shot counts as a zero, and you must resume on the correct gong.
Example
Sam hits the 8” gong for 1 point. He chooses to advance to the 6” and hits it, scoring 2 more points. Sam then tries the 4” gong but misses, scoring zero. He must now return to the 6”. If he misses the 6”, that’s another zero, and he must return to the 8”.
Other Rules to Keep In Mind
-
Shooters must announce to the scorekeeper when they switch gongs.
-
Only solid steel hits count — chain strikes or ricochets do not.

Scoring
-
Maximum Single Round: 27 points (1+2+3+3+3+3+3+3+3+3).
-
Game Length: Each shooter completes 5 sets of fire (50 total rounds, one full box of .22LR).
-
Match Maximum: 135 points.
In the case of a tie, the shooter with the highest single-round score wins.
Competitor Order
-
The first set’s shooting order is determined by drawing numbered chips.
-
In subsequent sets, the lowest scorer shoots first.
-
If two shooters tie in score, the one who posted that score first shoots first in the next round.
The Challenge
Make no mistake — hitting steel at 300 yards with a .22LR is no easy task. The bullet drop is dramatic, the wind drift is unforgiving, and consistency requires skill in every fundamental of marksmanship:
-
Rifle setup
-
Trigger control
-
Wind reading
-
Stable shooting position
Rimfire Long Gong rewards precision, patience, and practice.
Do you think you have what it takes to run up the score?
