Extreme Long Range

Extreme Long Range (ELR)

Extreme Long Range (ELR) competition pushes precision shooting to distances once thought impossible. While most long-range matches stop at 1,000 yards, ELR events regularly extend to 1,500, 2,000, and even beyond 2,500 yards.

The Basics

  • Distances: 1 mile (1,760 yards) and farther, with some competitions exceeding 2 miles.

  • Targets: Very large steel plates, often 36" or bigger, to account for the challenge at such extreme distances.

  • Scoring: Points for hits on steel within a set number of rounds.

Rifles and Equipment

  • Rifles: Highly specialized, custom-built rifles chambered in big-caliber cartridges like .375 CheyTac, .416 Barrett, and other large wildcats designed for stability and retained energy at long range.

  • Optics: Ultra-high magnification scopes with extreme elevation adjustment or used in combination with angled scope bases.

  • Support Gear: Bipods, heavy rests, rear bags, and advanced ballistic computers are all part of the ELR shooter’s toolkit.

  • Ammo: Handloaded ammunition is the standard, tailored for maximum consistency.

The Challenge

At distances of a mile or more, wind becomes the ultimate factor. Even a 1 mph shift can move a bullet several feet off target. Shooters must master ballistics, environmental factors, and wind reading to have any chance of connecting with steel.

Why Shoot ELR?

ELR is about pushing the boundaries of marksmanship and equipment. It’s not just about shooting long — it’s about problem-solving under extreme conditions. For many shooters, hearing that steel plate ring at 2,000 yards is the ultimate achievement in precision rifle competition.

Creedmoor Sports carries the precision gear you’ll need for ELR, from high-quality rests and shooting mats to reloading and support equipment for long-range accuracy.
