F-Class and F-TR Competition

What is F-Class and F-TR Competition?

F-Class is one of the most precise forms of long-range rifle competition in the world. Shooters fire prone at paper bullseye targets at distances up to 1,000 yards. The goal is simple but incredibly challenging: put as many shots as possible into the smallest scoring rings.

Within F-Class, there are two categories: F-Open and F-TR (Target Rifle). Both emphasize precision marksmanship, but the rifle setups and rules differ slightly to create separate classes of competition.

The Basics of F-Class

  • Distance: Matches are usually fired at 600 or 1,000 yards.

  • Target: NRA Long Range targets with a 10-ring and tiny X-ring for tie-breaking. At 1,000 yards, the X-ring is just 5 inches across!

  • Position: Prone, with support from a bipod or front rest and a rear bag.

  • Scoring: 10 points for the center ring, 9, 8, 7 for shots farther out, with Xs as tie-breakers.

F-Open vs. F-TR

F-Open

  • Any caliber up to .35 allowed (6mm and 7mm cartridges are most common).

  • Rifles can weigh up to 22 pounds.

  • Shooters may use a front rest (mechanical or pedestal) plus a rear sandbag.

  • Highly customized rifles with heavy barrels and high-power optics are common.

F-TR (Target Rifle)

  • Limited to .308 Winchester or .223 Remington only.

  • Rifle weight limit is 18.15 pounds (including optics).

  • Front support must be a bipod (no pedestal rests).

  • Designed to be a more affordable and accessible category.

Equipment Needed

For Both Classes:

  • Precision rifle chambered in an approved caliber.

  • High-magnification scope (most shooters use 25–55x).

  • Quality rear sandbag.

  • Shooting mat for prone position.

  • Eye and ear protection.

F-Open Specific:

  • Adjustable pedestal front rest.

  • Heavier custom rifle builds.

F-TR Specific:

  • Bipod (rigid, stable competition designs are popular).

  • .308 Win or .223 Rem ammo — often handloaded for consistency.

Tips for Success in F-Class

  1. Load Development Matters: Most competitors handload ammunition to achieve extreme consistency.

  2. Wind Reading is King: At 1,000 yards, even a small wind shift can move a bullet out of the 10-ring.

  3. Build a Solid Position: Stay relaxed, minimize muscle tension, and let the rifle recoil naturally.

  4. Use Quality Optics: Clear, repeatable scopes are essential for holding tight groups at distance.

  5. Track Your Data: Record wind calls, scope adjustments, and conditions in a data book for every match.

Why Shoot F-Class?

F-Class is the ultimate test of precision rifle marksmanship. It combines the technical side of reloading and rifle setup with the human challenge of reading wind and controlling fundamentals.

  • F-Open attracts shooters who enjoy high-end custom rifles and maximum precision.

  • F-TR offers a more approachable, caliber-restricted path that still challenges even the best marksmen.

Both classes are competitive, rewarding, and full of camaraderie — and they continue to grow worldwide.
