PRS Competition

Precision Rifle Series (PRS)

What is the Precision Rifle Series?

The Precision Rifle Series (PRS) is one of the fastest-growing shooting sports in the world. It challenges competitors to engage steel targets at varying distances — often between 300 and 1,200 yards — from multiple, unconventional shooting positions, all under time pressure.

PRS matches are designed to simulate real-world shooting scenarios. You might shoot from rooftops, barricades, or uneven terrain. Each stage tests your ability to quickly build a stable position, read the wind, and make accurate shots at unknown distances.

The Basics

  • Distances: 300 – 1,200 yards (some matches stretch farther).

  • Targets: Steel plates of varying sizes, typically 1–3 MOA at each distance.

  • Course of Fire: Usually 8–12 stages, 8–10 rounds per stage.

  • Time Limits: Around 90 seconds per stage — speed and precision both matter.

Rifles and Equipment

  • Rifles: Bolt-action precision rifles chambered in cartridges like 6 mm Creedmoor, 6 Dasher, or 6.5 Creedmoor.

  • Optics: Variable-power scopes with exposed turrets for dialing elevation and wind.

  • Support Gear: Bipods, tripods, rear bags, data cards, and rangefinders.

  • Ammunition: Match-grade factory or handloaded ammo optimized for consistency.

Most PRS rifles are custom-built for stability and recoil management, often weighing 16–20 pounds with chassis stocks and heavy barrels.

Skills That Matter

  • Wind Reading: Even small wind changes can move a bullet several inches at 1,000 yards.

  • Position Building: Shooters must create stable rests on obstacles quickly.

  • Time Management: You must balance speed with accuracy under pressure.

  • Data Tracking: Knowing your “dope” (elevation and wind holds) for each distance is key.

Why Shoot PRS?

PRS is a perfect blend of competition, problem-solving, and precision. It’s fast-paced, practical, and rewarding. Every stage is different, so you’re always learning something new about your rifle, your gear, and yourself.

It’s also one of the most welcoming communities in shooting — you’ll find everyone from military snipers and hunters to first-time competitors sharing advice and spotting hits.

Creedmoor Sports supports PRS competitors with high-quality shooting bags, bipods, rests, and accessories to help you perform at your best on every stage.
