PRS Rimfire and NRL22

PRS Rimfire & NRL22

What is PRS Rimfire and NRL22?

PRS Rimfire and National Rifle League 22 (NRL22) bring the excitement of centerfire PRS competition to the affordable world of .22 LR rimfire shooting.

These matches mimic full-scale precision rifle stages — barricades, props, timed stages, and reactive steel targets — but at much shorter distances, typically from 25 to 300 yards.

The concept is simple: same skills, smaller scale, less cost. Rimfire PRS and NRL22 have become hugely popular for training, club matches, and new shooters entering precision competition.

The Basics

  • Distances: 25 – 300 yards.

  • Targets: Small steel plates or gongs, usually ½" to 2" in size.

  • Course of Fire: 5 – 10 stages with 10 shots each.

  • Time Limit: 90 – 120 seconds per stage.

  • Scoring: One point per hit — highest total wins.

Rifles and Equipment

  • Rifles: Bolt-action or semi-auto .22 LR rifles — common models include the Anschutz 1710 and 1761, Ruger Precision Rimfire, Bergara B-14R, and Vudoo Gun Works V-22.

  • Optics: Variable-power scopes with reliable tracking and fine reticles.

  • Gear: Bipods, bags, and tripods just like centerfire PRS.

  • Ammunition: Match-grade .22 LR like Lapua Center-X and Super Long Range, Eley Tenex, or SK Rifle Match.

Because rimfire bullets are affected by wind even more than centerfire rounds, shooters learn to master wind calls, elevation adjustments, and holdovers — essential skills that carry over to any precision discipline.

These matches are the most affordable gateway into precision rifle competition. You can train at shorter ranges, use less expensive ammo, and still practice the same fundamentals as centerfire PRS.
